Design & Technology

Vision

We want students who are able develop problem-solving skills, iterative design skills, creativity and innovation.

The purpose of the Design & Technology curriculum is to inspire creativity and confidence, equipping students to design, make, and evaluate products and systems that positively impact the world around them.

Through the study of materials, textiles, food and nutrition and graphic communication at Key Stages 3 and 4, students develop the knowledge, technical skills, and critical thinking required to tackle real world challenges. The curriculum fosters innovation, resilience, and collaboration, preparing students to make informed decisions and pursue further education, careers, and lifelong engagement with design and technology.

Overview

To achieve this, we will:

Encourage Creative Problem-Solving:
We will provide opportunities for students to explore real world challenges through design and technology. Individual guidance and project-based learning will help students develop their own innovative solutions while appreciating the diversity of approaches and ideas.

Foster Critical Thinking and Evaluation:
Our curriculum will emphasize analytical thinking, encouraging students to question design choices, materials, and processes. By studying successful products, historical innovations, and emerging technologies, students will learn to evaluate outcomes critically and refine their designs.

Support Experimentation and Innovation:
We believe that innovation thrives when students are encouraged to take risks and make mistakes. Our department will create a safe environment for experimentation, where trial, error, and iterative design are seen as essential parts of learning. Students will explore new materials, techniques, and technologies to develop adaptive, forward-thinking solutions.

Equip Students with Technical Skills and Design Literacy:
By offering comprehensive training in practical skills, CAD, prototyping, and manufacturing techniques, alongside theoretical knowledge of design principles and sustainability, our curriculum equips students to bring their ideas to life. This combination of technical mastery and conceptual understanding enables students to design, create, and evaluate with confidence and purpose.
