Drama

Vision

Our vision is for Drama to be a creative, inclusive and inspiring subject where students grow in confidence, explore ideas and develop skills for life beyond school.

Overview

Drama at Goffs-Churchgate sits within the English faculty and provides a creative, supportive space where students grow in confidence, imagination and self-expression. Our curriculum is shaped around the roles of actor, creator, director and designer, allowing students to understand theatre from multiple viewpoints. Through a rich blend of contemporary and classic texts, students explore ideas that reflect the world today, developing as thoughtful performers and critical audience members.

At Key Stage 3, students build strong foundations in performance and communication. In Year 7, the focus is on creating character through topics such as Shakespeare and comedy. Students learn to use voice, movement and expression effectively while gaining confidence in performing with others.

In Year 8, students explore how style, staging and design influence mood and atmosphere, studying theatrical movements such as surrealism and expressionism.

By Year 9, students are ready to interpret more complex material, working with set texts like A Christmas Carol and Blood Brothers. They begin to analyse narrative, context and character motivation while making increasingly informed decisions as performers and directors. This progression provides a secure platform for students who choose to continue Drama into Key Stage 4.

At Key Stage 4, students study BTEC Performing Arts (Drama). Here they deepen their understanding of performance, devising and evaluative skills, learning how professionals shape theatre from first idea to final performance. Students reflect on their own progress, analyse the work of others and experience theatre beyond the classroom through a live performance visit and an in-house workshop. This phase of study strengthens resilience, creativity and teamwork while preparing students for further education and a wide range of careers.

Drama at Goffs-Churchgate nurtures communication, leadership and collaboration. Students learn to listen, respond, compromise and take responsibility within a shared creative process. With countless roles both on and off stage, every student can succeed. Our drama club and technical crew offer additional chances to take part in productions, support backstage, run lighting and sound, or assist with front-of-house. These experiences highlight the breadth of the performing arts industry and give students the chance to discover where their strengths lie.

Throughout their journey, students develop transferable skills, including problem-solving, resilience, empathy and clear communication, that support them in school, further education and future employment. Above all, Drama is for everyone, and the experiences gained inside and outside the classroom help students become confident, expressive and capable young people.
